But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. Matthew 6:33 ESV

We read this verse and many times use it to some up a way out of where we are or declare why something hasn’t gone the way we like or possibly just a glimpse of hope for the place we are at. But what amazes me is this scripture is actually a summary for the greatest public address ever given. Greater than resignation address given by George Washington to the Congress Knowing that those that supported him would give him the power to be king of this great nation yet he knew our great republic could never be great if there was ever a king even if it was him so he resigned giving possibly one of the greatest and most humble resignation speeches of all time. Yes this address to the people in Matthew chapters 5 and 6 far supersedes the Gettysburg address given by President Lincoln at a time so pivotal for our country and underestimated by its people. Yes even such great addresses of Franklin D. Roosevelts first inauguration or even Winston Churchills address “Their finest hour” or even Martin Luther King Jr.’ s “I have a Dream” given in a time when our country was torn apart by the ignorance and arrogance of racism. Yes all these speeches and public addresses however pivotal and motivating still were yet spinoffs of the greatest public address ever given. The “Sermon on the Mount” given by Jesus. You see all of these great orators that have mentioned were Fathers of their time. They were Fathers of change. Some led armies, some led nations, some led movements, but they are were fathers to their cause and father figures to their followers. Jesus IS (not was) the father and creator of all.

I find the 33 Verse of chapter 6 a astounding summary given the preceding address. As a Christian, everything I need to know to live an exemplary life for Christ is in this address. We are given the Beatitudes, blessed are those who are pure in heart, for they shall see God. Jesus told us how to be an example to others by speaking about being the Salt and Light. He tells us His purpose and why He had to come to fulfill the law. He tells us how to deal with anger, lust, divorce, keeping our word, how to love our enemies, how to take care of and give to those in need, shows us how to pray by giving us the Lord’s prayer, teaches us how to fast, tell us not to put our trust in material things, tell’s us not to worry he see all and knows all, lets us know how to judge a tree by its fruit so we are careful how we deal with others. He gives us the golden rule.

Way before the greats of the of the public view ever had their day Jesus had already said all they could ever tell us.

So I ask you today when you worry about money, food, clothing, children, the state of the economy, your children, did you read his word? He has already given you his word that these things will be taken care of. We have no problem believing these great men when they speak to encourage us and lift us up. So why don’t you believe when the One who hold time in his hands has already spoken even before these great men were.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. Matthew 6:33 ESV
